“Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless in facing them." ― Rabindranath Tagore

30 Days.

A lot can happen in just one day, let alone thirty. For the crew of the Ulysses, thirty days have all merged into one thanks to the horrendous, seemingly never-ending convoy escort duty we’ve been on since leaving the Gamma Quadrant. The lawless nature of the Northern Expanse has drawn our Luna-class ship away from her first mission of exploration, the only benefit being the fact the crew had plenty of time to get to know each other and the ship itself.

You see, the Northern Expanse represents a microcosm of the galaxy at large; whether its minor players such as the Breen, Ferengi, or Tzenkethi, or even larger galactic powers such as the Cardassians or the Romulans, it seems that anyone and everyone seems to be content to threaten peace, free passage and trade in the area of space to the galactic north of Federation space.

My friend, the year is 2393 and it has been several years since the Hobus incident, which did a lot of damage to the Romulan Star Empire, although did not wipe them out entirely. The Cardassians, Klingons, Breen and Ferengi would have enjoyed that all too much. But as the years roll on and the Federation’s assistance begins to dwindle, others continue to try to take advantage of the weak position the Romulan people find themselves in. It all stems from the years before Hobus, when several resistance groups set out to oppose what the Empire was becoming. Pirate attacks became an ever increasing threat in the Northern Expanse. Thus, our presence in the Expanse, to try to figure out what is going on and bring peace and stability to our little zone of the galaxy. One thing is for certain, the Rihannsu Resistance are not making our efforts any easier.

Over and over again, dangerous scenario after dangerous scenario, Starfleet vessels in the Expanse seem to become targets for those seeking to destroy the fragile peace. Although we’ve been in the Expanse for less than a month, the crew of the Ulysses do not have the luxury of taking time off to deal with their shared experiences; as always, duty calls.

If only I was at liberty to divulge the reality of the true danger we are all in…
