Tour of Key Facilities

Unlike many of the newer classes of starship in the fleet, the Galaxy is built for comfort and with a focus on the families that often reside aboard also of significant importance. Initially designed for long term missions, Starfleet was not insensitive to the need for their officers to have family present. As such, there are many facilities aboard that civilians and guests have access to that they wouldn’t usually have on other starships. During the major refit of 2395, many of the Ulysses’ interior spaces were given an overhaul too.

Arboretum

The arboretum (or botanical garden) is a garden that has been incorporated into several Federation starship classes in the 23rd and 24th centuries including the Constitution-class and Galaxy-class. As well as being an area where crewmembers can relax in their off duty hours, the arboretum’s true purpose is part of the science department aboard a starship, where botanists can experiment with various forms of plant life.

Brig

A brig or holding cell was a type of prison on board a starship, space station, or planetary facility. They were heavily guarded rooms that employed either gates or force fields to keep those incarcerated segregated from the general population. These areas were used to contain criminals, fugitives, and others who posed a security risk and must be detained. They were also used as a means of punishment within the Starfleet ranks. The brig’s emergency evacuation protocol may be invoked if a critical situation occurs requiring prisoner evacuation. Ethical protocols state that prisoner evacuation is to occur in life-saving circumstances only.

Cargo Bay

A cargo bay or cargo hold is a general purpose storage facility aboard shuttles, starships and starbases. Cargo bays are often equipped with large transporters to assist in the moving of cargo containers. In situations where mass transport is required, cargo is directed into the bay by a transporter chief operating in a transporter room. Cargo bays are used in a variety of ways other than typical storage, including triage centers, brigs, and stasis unit facilities depending on the purpose of the mission.

Engineering

Engineering’s primary purpose is to be the central point for control of all engineering systems aboard a starship, especially those related to propulsion and power generation. The matter/antimatter reaction chamber (also known as the warp core) is located in engineering. Engineering can also be used as a command and control center, overriding primary centers such as the bridge, battle bridge or auxiliary control. Main Engineering is the only engineering facility functional at all times.

Hydroponics

Hydroponics is the growing of plants in a medium other than soil, such as a nutrient-rich liquid. The mess facility personnel maintains a hydroponic greenhouse to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for the crew’s mess. Some Federation starships have laboratories devoted to hydroponics. The Ulysses has a hydroponics laboratory, which is to be visited annually by the winners of the primary school science fair. The variable environmental controls in the redesigned cargo bay that houses hydroponics equipment makes the environment adaptable to different plants.
